This course is for students that have a real passion for sport, and want to learn about the art/science of coaching sports skills . Students will develop a range of skills and knowledge in key areas of sports coaching which will be appropriate for successful transition into a sports coaching/delivery based career. The course is ideal for those who wish to work with sports clubs, schools, national governing bodies or operate sports coaching based businesses.
The course is delivered through a range of ways including practical based work, reflective practice, sports performance analysis and planning, and organising and running sports coaching events. The course is predominantly practical based and centred on codes of conduct and professional practice. As part of the course students will undertake work experience. The course is fully supported by Manchester Leisure and work placement providers.
The course is delivered both full time and part time, predominately over three days (full time) by industry specialist staff. The staff have a wide range of knowledge within sport and coaching, and have actively been involved with professional football, power lifting, gymnastics, hockey and fitness.

Year one modules are as follows:
- Coaching Process and Practice
This module covers the planning and conducting of safe, progressive coaching sessions. Students will learn different methods used in coaching such as the use of demonstration, problem solving, differentiating coaching sessions, delivery methods and communication styles
- Coaching Special Populations
This module will examine the delivery of sports coaching within a wide range of environments and contexts.
- Introduction to Policy and Practice in Sport
This module will cover the framework of sport and coaching in the UK.
- Fitness Testing
This module will introduce students to the wide range of fitness testing techniques within a sports coaching context.
- Introduction to Study and Management Skills
This module covers the wide range of skills involved with academic and personal growth.
- Introduction to Human Resource Management
This module covers a range of aspects involved with running a sports coaching based business. It will cover aspects such as theories of human behaviour and motivation, supervisory skills and techniques, delegation, setting aims and targets in human resource management and dealing with conflict and disciplinary issues.
Year two modules are as follows:
- Psychology in Sport
This module will examine the range and application of sport psychology techniques within a sports coaching context.
- Analysing Sport Performance
This module will examine the key elements when analysing performance in a sports skills and tactics context. It will cover areas such as performance analysis, notational analysis, developing training programmes around data, scientific based feedback, and performer feedback.
- Financial Aspects of Sport and Business
This module will examine the financial elements involved with running a sports coaching business.
- Work Experience
This module will enable the student to gain experience within a sports coaching context.
- Sports Marketing
This module will examine a range of factors involved with sports marketing.
- Scientific aspects of Sports Performance
This module will focus on the scientific aspects involved with sports coaching.
The course is assessed through two tasks per module. Tasks are based around industry scenarios and are practical based in many of the modules. Development of practical and academic skills (e.g. delivering sessions, essay writing, report writing, case studies and self-awareness /reflective evaluation of own skill sets) are built into assignments to enable students to develop and grow their skills in a wide range of areas.
Upon graduation from the foundation degree programme students may have the opportunity to progress and complete a linked honours degree at the University of Salford or suitable degree courses at other universities.
Alternatively students will have the skills to go directly into employment. Past students have go on to work in community sports coaching, sports development, sports based management and sports based teaching contexts.
Applicants are required to have two A Levels (including PE), or a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma with Merit, Pass, Pass or a BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Extended Certificate with Merit, Merit in Sport, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 160.
The ideal candidate will have the desire to pursue a career within the sports coaching industry coupled with a lifelong passion for sport. You will have already worked in a leadership/ volunteering capacity and have some experience of delivering/ assisting sports coaching within a club or school.
Applicants should be highly motivated, have strong interests in sport/ sports coaching and be able to work well as a member of a team.
Applicants initially may be required to attend an interview and complete an interview task.
Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
