This course aims to prepare students with the creative skills required for the rapidly increasing employment opportunities available within the Media Make-Up industry.
With the exciting new developments occurring in the world of TV, Manchester is set to become an exhilarating and innovative media city. Year 1 Modules:
-Styling for the Camera (20 credits) Core
This module will provide the learner with an opportunity to explore the technical processes and devices required to produce an industry standard portfolio.
-Cosmetic Function & Form (20 Credits) (Fashion & Media Pathway)
Learners will develop the basic theoretical and vocational skills of cosmetic function and method.
-The Art of Creative Make-up (20 Credits) (Fashion & Media Pathway)
Learners will explore the varying styles of visual art.
-Creative Hairstyling (20 Credits) (Fashion & Media Pathway)
This module is designed to provide students with an opportunity to generate the skills required to produce a range of fashion hair styles.
-Historical Concepts Hair & Make-up (20 Credits) (fashion & Media Pathway)
Students will study a series of historical genres.
-Special Effects Character Make-up (20 credits) (special effects Pathway)
This module is designed to provide the learner with the opportunity to develop the basic principles for producing special effects make-up.
-Prosthetic Art (20 Credits) (special effects Pathway)
With the theoretical and basic practices required, students will compose a prosthetic characterisation.
-Specialist Hair and Make-up Design (20 credits) (special effects Pathway)
This unit provides learners with the opportunity to expand and compliment their own creative style through the utilisation of hair design and special effects make-up.
-Body Art / Airbrushing (20 credits)(special effects Pathway)
This module is designed to provide the learners with an opportunity to express their artistic creativity in the form of body art.
Year 2 Modules:
-Professional Practice (20 Credits) Core
This unit is designed to provide the students with an opportunity to develop first-hand experience of the media industry.
-Freelancing (20 Credits) Core
This unit is designed to enable the learner to understand the freelance employment and career opportunities available.
-Make-up Design Application (20 Credits)
The learner will be encouraged to take an experimental yet informed approach to the visual development of their vocational skills as a make-up artist.
-Applied Postiche / hair styling (20 credits) Core
The unit will enable the learner to analyse and examine the effective use of postiche resources within the media industry context. Learners will also develop the principles and practices of wig application and styling.
-Showcase (20 credits) Core
Learners will develop their knowledge of the management principles and practices and be able to translate this theory into practice.
-Portfolio Development (20 credits) Core
This module allows the opportunity to identify visual design through the exploration of different contemporary styles and cultural influences.
The course is assessed through two tasks per module, which are presented in an assignment format. The assignments are completed and submitted within submission week (January for semester one modules and June for semester two modules).
The learners practical expertise will be developed and be assessed through experience in workshops, studio and external environments. The learner will be exposed to a series of techniques through tutor led classes and demonstrations, project based briefs and individual development support.
Graduates from this programme are expected to find employment in a variety of multi-disciplinary practices, including television/film production companies, theatres or as freelance artists. There are also direct progression routes to top-up degree courses at various universities.
Former students have worked on exciting projects such as Hollywood BlockBuster `Captain America' and `My Week with Marilyn'. In addition we have a range of learners who are currently working for well known make-up brands such as Mac, Benefit and Bobbie Brown.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for make-up, be creative and enthusiastic. Students would benefit from undertaking work experience.
All applicants are required to apply through UCAS, and will then be invited to attend an interview where they will be asked to complete an initial assessment and a free writing exercise. Applicants will be asked to provide examples of written work, a portfolio of images demonstrating their skills within make-up / hair, or provide examples of designs work/illustrations.
Applicants should possess an A level, BTEC Extended Diploma or an equivalent level 3 qualification with a creative content , mature applicants (aged 21 or above) who demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
