This course provides individuals with a broad understanding of organisation structure, the business environment, and systems, analysis and design of database development, together with the underpinning theory of computer architecture and networks. It enables them to function effectively in the business world in the provision of IT systems for the support of the information requirements of organisations.
The course develops appropriate knowledge and skills in business and IT through an integrative teaching and learning strategy. The principles and techniques of management are also studied throughout the course and offer an opportunity to combine a business and technical education in an applied vocational context. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of hardware and software packages and products to the solution of business problems.
It is most suited to individuals who wish to relate their technical knowledge to a broad range of business issues from a general management perspective. With a focus on the commercial application of technology, it supports a wide range of career opportunities through the development of appropriate skills.

A variety of assessment methods are used, including coursework assignments, presentations, in-class assessments and group and individual projects. This course also requires students to undertake work-based experience.

On successful completion of this course students may apply to university and top up the HND to a full honours degree.
Applicants are required to have a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma with Merit, Pass, Pass or a BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Extended Certificate with Merit, Merit in an IT or business-related subject area, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 160.
Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
