What's the Business Studies course about?

This course is designed for students that have an interest in business and enjoy finding out about the world of commerce. In the first year of the Business HND, students will develop a basic understanding of the main topics in business and follow a more specific pathway in the second year.

The course is delivered largely through tutor presentations, group work, problem solving initiatives, personal research and a programme of professional speakers brought in throughout the year.

The course is delivered full time over three days by college academic staff, which also includes individual study and research time in the library.

Year 1 Modules:
- Business Environment
This module gives an outline of the external factors which affect how an organisation operates.

- Managing Financial Resources and Decisions
This module gives an introduction to the financial resources that are available within businesses.

- Organisations and behaviour
Students will gain an understanding of the behaviour of individuals and teams.

- Marketing Principles
Students will gain an overview of marketing, covering the relevance of price, product, promotion and place in determining the marketing strategy.

- Aspects of Contract and Negligence for Business
The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of contracts and the skills to apply them in business situations.

- Business Decision making
This module will provide students with an opportunity to develop the techniques for handling and analysing data.

- Business Strategy
Students will gain knowledge and understanding of how a business can plan and organise itself for future success.

- Research Project:
This module is designed to further develop the students ability to undertake independent enquiry and critical analysis, through a business research project.

Year 2 Modules (varies with subject pathway):
- Small Business Enterprise (optional):
This module develops students knowledge and understanding of the particular issues and problems that small and medium businesses face in the UK economy.

- European Business
The importance of international trade and in particular UK trade with the European Union will be explored.

- Corporate Environmental and Social Management (optional):
Students will develop an understanding of sustainable development which also balances the economic, social, and environmental issues and effects this has on business management.

- Employability Skills (optional)
This module allows the students to build a portfolio of evidence gained from their experience at work as well as in college,

In addition to the four modules above students must also choose one of the following pathways:

- Business and Finance
- Business and Marketing
- Business and Human Resource Managementt

This course is assessed in the following ways:

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Upon completion there are a number of opportunities for further study, including degree programmes or professional qualifications. Students on the HND Business programme may choose to progress to one of the many 1 year top-up degrees offered at The Manchester College or to another University of their choice. The course can also lead to employment opportunities in business-related careers and industries.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants are required to have 2 A levels at grade D or above or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma/National Certificate or Extended Certificate in a business-related subject area, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 160.

Applicants should be highly motivated, and wish to gain a career in business management. They should also have strong planning, communication, interpersonal and research skills.

Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
