What's the Business and Marketing course about?

The programme provides challenging and comprehensive learning experiences that develops students intellectual, communication and practical skills. This course is ideal for those students who wish to either begin their careers or that are presently employed and wish to progress further in their present role.

All students are expected to undertake paid or unpaid work experience in both years of the course where they investigate a chosen topic and practice skills developed on the course. The course is classroom based (aside from the work experience element) and is delivered full time over two days by subject and industry specialist staff.

Year 1 Modules (Liable to minor modifications by MMU):

-Work Based Learning (30 credits):
This module gives students an opportunity to use their part time employment or work experience programme to further develop practical management skills and apply concepts learnt to an organisation.

-Information Analysis and Finance for Business (30 credits)
This module gives students an understanding and interpretation of financial statements and the use of costing techniques. It involves the use of digital resources to collect, organise, manage, find, analyse and present business related information effectively using a range of media, tools and techniques.

-Understanding and Managing People (30 Credits)
This module will provide students with a broad and detailed understanding of a range of psychological and sociological models related to understanding and managing people.

-Global Context of Modern Business (30 credits)
This module will offer students a breadth of understanding of the global business environment and an evaluation of practical business issues for both large and small firms, with specific reference to global institutions, markets, socio-economic, political and legal frameworks in a global context.

Year 2 Modules (currently under review and may be liable to modification):

-Work Based Learning 2 (20 credits):
Students in the 2nd year are expected to be more independent and reflect on their experiences learnt in the 1st year.

-Branding (20 credits):
This module offers students the opportunity to research and evaluate the changing nature of brands, by assessing the social, cultural and technological impacts upon them.

-Business Sustainability (20 credits):
This module offers students the opportunity to research and evaluate ecological and ethical issues and their impact on business.

-Marketing Concepts & Planning (20 credits):
This module provides students with an opportunity to analyse the concepts of marketing planning and allows them to formulate and present marketing proposals and plans for a product or service of their choice.

-Innovation, Creativity & Enterprise (20 credits):
This module creates an awareness of entrepreneurial career paths.

-Managing People (20 credits):
This module provides students with a broad and deep understanding of a range of concepts and models central to organisational behaviour and management.

The course is assessed through various tasks per module and scheduled across a range of deadline points in the year. Tasks are based around industry scenarios and are practical in many of the modules. Development, self reflection, awareness and evaluation of own skills are built into tasks to enable students to reflect and develop further. Some assessments also include elements of self and peer group assessments.

Other forms of assessment include a wide variety of forms e.g. seminars; regular weekly tutorials; interaction in class; peer feedback on in-class presentations; workshop activity with feedback; online quizzes; tutor feedback on group and project work; and regular final assessment monitoring with guidance to improve.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Students completing the foundation degree will have the opportunity to top-up their qualification to the BA (Honours) Degree in Business Administration (with pathways) at Manchester Metropolitan University. Students can apply through UCAS for other top-up degree programmes at other Universities. Alternatively, graduates will be prepared for further study to professional business related qualifications such as CIPD.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

The ideal candidate will either want to progess or enter the field of business and/or marketing

Applicants will normally be considered for entry to foundation degrees provided that they have three GCSE subjects at Grade C or higher including Maths and English Language and one subject at GCE A2 Level (or nationally accepted alternative qualifications) at grade C or a Pass, Merit or Distinction at level 3 NVQ or BTEC qualifications.

Students are also accepted that have passed a recognised Access programme

Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who have no formal academic qualifications may be considered for entry to the programme if they can demonstrate that they have experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for foundation degree level work. Such applicants will usually have at least three years relevant work experience and be asked to submit a portfolio.
