What's the Business Computing course about?

This course has been designed to provide individuals with knowledge and understanding of a broad range of subjects, methods and products relevant to using and developing IT resources to support an organisation's operations. It has been developed in consultation with employers to meet their recruitment needs and also serves as a platform for further study.

Students develop an understanding of how IT is used and developed to support a business. This knowledge is then applied to a wide range of standard business tools and development suites used in both small and medium sized enterprises and large organisations. Students will use a range of software, which could include Microsoft Access, Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, Oracle, Adobe Creative Suite and Sun Java.

- Systems analysis and design
- Network fundamentals

- Advanced database
- Advanced programming

Assessment makes use of a range of activities, including reports, oral presentations, group work, practical assignments, MCQ tests, time-constrained tests and peer assessment. Several end of year examinations as well as a number of assignments must also be undertaken.

This course provides an ideal pathway for anyone who wants to pursue a career in IT within public or commercial organisations. Graduates may progress into numerous careers, including IT office management, software development or systems analysis. Alternatively, students may choose to top up their foundation degree to a full BSc (Honours) degree with further study at university.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants are required to have a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma with Merit, Pass, Pass or a BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Extended Certificate with Merit, Merit in an IT-related subject area, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 160.

Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
