What's the Acting for Live and Recorded Media course about?

This programme has been designed to prepare students for work in theatre and the related mediated industries of television, film and radio performance. The course will allow students to experience a range of disciplines pertinent to today's actor and the professional industry. The college has two theatres, two performance venues and an outdoor, covered, amphitheatre, all the theatres are used for student productions and are supported by the professional technical team.

The actor training programme is rooted in the training systems of Stanislavski. Within this you will explore practioners such as Uta Hagen, Sanford Meisner and Max Stafford-Clark to name a few. Students will follow a rigorous training programme that develops the actors movement, vocal, analytical and acting skills. These transferable performance skills are developed throughout the training to meet the needs of a range of texts, mediums and of the professional industry.

Students receive assistance from the college in many ways, including portfolio and show reel production, audition preparation, and audition alerts.

Students are assessed through a combination of practical work and written assessment. The dissertation process has an optional part practical strand as well the traditional written option.

Our university level courses incorporate work experience and live briefs. This provides you with the opportunity to gain real work skills and develop relationships with potential employers

Students are assessed through a combination of practical work (80%) and written assessment (20%) - the course culminates in a 5000 word extended essay.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

This programme trains actors for the professional theatre and its allied media industries and also provides excellent opportunities for students to progress to postgraduate studies. We have a strong progression rate for students progressing into employment, the Arden Theatre school has close links with agents which students will have exposure to throughout their third year. A professional development programme is imbedded into the third year of the course which helps students in making the transition from training into industry.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants must have two A Levels at grade C or above or MMM at BTEC National Diloma level or DD at National Certificate level or equivalent. We expect applicants to have achieved a grade C or above at GCSE English, or equivalent qualifications. The school invites students who meet these criteria to audition, which will then determine entry to the programme. Minimum UCAS tariff points required:240.

Mature students or students with extensive professional experience can be accredited with prior learning (APL). Each case is to be discussed individually with the course team leaders on application, audition and interviews.

Students with equivalent learning qualifications (ELQ) at degree level or above must be aware that they are eligible to pay the full tuition fees and may not be entitled to student finance. Please see the website for further details.

While the School believes that cultural diversity enriches the educational experience, the programme centers on British theatre training and, therefore, places considerable emphasis on English text. For overseas applicants or for those for whom English is a second language, a proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is essential. The School requires such students to demonstrate an IELTS score of 6.0. Entry to this pathway at levels 2 and 3 can only happen in exceptional circumstances, and given its intensive actor training, this programme is not a standard top-up route for foundation degree graduates.
