This course is designed for students who are passionate about video games, want to be involved in the game design or CGI movie industry and love the idea of working as part of a team to bring their ideas to life. The Foundation Degree 3D Modelling & Animation course is specifically designed to give student's a taste of the CGI industry, covering the many different tools and assets of CGI design, whilst giving learner's the necessary skills and knowledge needed to prepare themselves to the creative industry.
The course is delivered through a combination of specialised classes, one to one tutorials and workshops, giving a large amount of support to students own creative ideas and projects.
The first year of the course looks at a wide area of skills within 3D development, giving the student a chance to experience many different roles as a 3D artist whilst gaining a more specific understanding or their own goals.
The second year of the course is focussed on expanding creative and technical knowledge within 3D development and using it in a professional industry environment. This is done by with students working with industry clients on a given project.
The course is delivered full time over three days by industry specialist staff supported by a range of guest speakers. We maintain a high and wide level of industry software at the college and offer full student support throughout.

Year 1 Modules:
-3D Modelling
In this module students will cover the many methods of 3D modelling from basic foundations to an intermediate level. It covers box, spline and nurbs modelling techniques while also visiting 3D digital sculpting methods and software. Within this module the student will also learn un-wrapping and texturing techniques to give their models more detail and colour, whilst also learning how to use digital sculpt mapping to create displace, normal and ambient occlusion maps.
3D Animation
This module can be summarised as two parts, containing the theory of animation and 3D technical animation. Students will be asked to research and document the history of animation, different animation methods and the main principles of animation. Students will then use this theory and incorporate it into their technical 3D animation, where they will learn a wide array of animation tools within 3D software.
Rendering & Compositing
In this module the student will cover various technical elements to 3D rendering such as lighting, camera position, depth of field and rendering techniques and settings. They will then go on to take their final rendered images and apply post-production compositing to create a final piece of work. The module covers 3D camera tracking using specialised industry software to place 3D work within real world footage.
Year 2 Modules:
3D Development
This module is a collection of 3D modelling, texturing, animation and rendering combined at an advanced level. It gives the student the opportunity to focus and improve a specific 3D skill whilst working as part of a team using team management skills to complete a task.
The course is assessed with one assignment per module. Students are encouraged to be creative through all assignments, but must meet a certain criteria given by the tutor. Development of report writing and self-awareness / evaluation of own skills are built in to assigments to enable students to develop themselves.
Examples of assessments include:
-Interview
-Review / Tutorials
-Group Assessment / Crit
-Portfolio of project work
-Project presentations
-Personal Development / Digital Diary
-Research
