Personal tutors

Personal tutors are teaching staff with a responsibility for giving information and support to students on most courses. Every teaching department has personal tutors who normally meet students both individually and in occasional group sessions throughout the year.

The tutor’s role is to

  • help students keep track of their progress
  • be the first point of contact for students wanting any help or advice
  • refer students to other sources of support with academic or personal concerns
  • support students with their learning and career development

For students studying part-time (for example, evening classes and short courses) their personal tutor is likely to be the class teacher. Part-time students will not normally see their tutor in a regular meeting. However, your tutor can help with general advice or refer you to other support services if you want additional advice and help.
