Dyslexia/dyspraxia

The Manchester College was awarded the Dyslexia Friendly College Quality Mark for the North Area Sixth Form Colleges in September 2008.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty related to language, affecting about 10% of the population. It can affect reading, writing and other areas such as memory and organisational skills.

Dyspraxia / Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) is a specific learning difficulty related to the organisation of movement. Speech, perception and thought may also be affected.

The Manchester College’s dyslexia service provides screening, diagnostic assessment and different forms of support.

Assessment of your needs

All students have an initial assessment that includes reading and writing. We may contact you for dyslexia screening and further assessment if we feel it might help you. Your tutors may also refer you to the dyslexia team.

The support we provide

Once your needs are assessed support may include:

  • one to one multi-sensory support,small group support (depending on your needs)
  • training in assistive and mobile technologies
  • liaison with your tutors to help you with your course
  • individual learning plan (ILP)
  • help with adapting materials

What should you do?

  • Make sure that you have disclosed on your application and/or enrolment form.
  • If you are on a course, ask for a referral through your tutor or visit your student services team, or e-mail to the address below.
