What are the aims of this course?

If you want to pursue a career in coaching, teaching or sports therapy or are planning to progress on to a higher education sports-related course, this course is ideal for you. You will gain an in-depth understanding of sports development, coaching and fitness and will have the opportunity to obtain additional complementary first aid, coaching and sports leaders qualifications.

You will study:
- Sports development
- Sports coaching
- Psychology for sports performance
- Profiling sports performance
- Principles of anatomy and physiology
- The physiology of fitness
- Practical team sport
- Rules, regulations and officiating

- Sports nutrition
- Sport as a business
- Assessing risk in sport
- Sports injuries
- Leadership in sport and analysis of sports performance

You will also complete an additional five specialist units to gain the full qualification.

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Five GCSEs at grade A-C, including Maths and English, or a BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) with a Merit grade.

How is the course assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including assignments and practical activities.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. You will have the opportunity to gain coaching qualifications in different sports. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On completion of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport you can progress onto a sports related degree or another appropriate higher education course. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.

What are the career opportunities?

This course can lead to work in a leisure centre or a gym, or in sports coaching and teaching. In addition, it could provide entry into business and management within the leisure industry. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
