What are the aims of this course?
This course is designed as preparation to the recruitment and selection process used by the uniformed services. It covers all aspects of applying for jobs within the uniformed services including posts, such as police officer, fire fighter, armed personnel or support staff member. Everything you do on the course will benefit you in your application to your chosen service and throughout your career. You will be required to wear a uniform and will be under the same discipline as if you were in employment in a public service role. This is in order to give you a taste of what to expect in your chosen career. You will be required to make a financial contribution to the cost of your uniform.

You will study:
- The uniformed and non-uniformed public services sector
- Introduction to fitness and lifestyle
- Personal effectiveness
- Diversity
- Social responsibility and the value of the citizen
- Introduction to health and safety
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
No formal qualifications are required, however, you will need a positive attitude, commitment and self-motivation. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level that is equivalent to GCSE grades D-F. Entry level courses are also available for those who want to progress to a level 1 qualification but do not yet meet these requirements.
How is the course assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of ways that will be aimed at self development and improving opportunities available to you within the uniformed services. This will include written and practical assessments.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
On successful completion of the course you will achieve a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Public Services. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of this course you can apply for an appropriate uniformed service post or progress onto another appropriate college course, such as the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.
What are the career opportunities?
This course is designed to improve your chances in the uniformed services application process and benefit you in your chosen service. However, this course could also lead to other career options. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
