What are the aims of this course?
The level 1 NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations has been designed to cover those learners who require a broad range of engineering competencies. This is to enable progression either into the workplace or to gain additional engineering skills that may apply to a variety of contexts.
What are the areas covered by this course?
The course covers the following mandatory units:
- Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
- Using and communicating technical information
- Working safely in an engineering environment

Plus some optional units:
- Basic plumbing
- Electrical installation
- Engineering activities
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
No formal qualifications are required, however, you will need a positive attitude, commitment and self-motivation. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level that is equivalent to GCSE grades D-F. Entry level courses are also available for those who want to progress to a level 1 qualification but do not yet meet these requirements.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is mostly based on a portfolio of evidence.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
You will be awarded a level 1 NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations by City & Guilds. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
The qualification allows progression onto a variety of level 2 engineering related qualifications such as the BTEC Level 2 Diploma or the level 2 plumbing or electrical installation courses. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.
What are the career opportunities?
This course offers an entry point into the engineering profession. With further study or training, you could go on to work in engineering, building services (plumbing, electrical Installation and refrigeration) or motor vehicle (body repair and mechanic). Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
