What are the aims of this course?

This course is suitable for you if you want to work with children under the age of eight years in the caring, health and education services. Through both academic study and vocational experience you will learn how to work effectively with young children and their families. This course offers a clear progression route to university level study and employment.

You will study:

- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Protecting children
- Safe environments
- Professional and vocational practice
- Learning in the early years
- Childcare practice
- Plus some optional units

A placement in childcare is mandatory.

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Five GCSEs at grade A-C, including Maths and English, or a BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) with a Merit grade. Please note: if you enrol on this course, you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) application form. How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed by a range of methods including portfolio building, projects, assignments, coursework and practical assessment.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

Successful completion of the course can lead directly to a wide range of higher education courses, such as HNDs, foundation degrees and degrees. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.

What are the career opportunities?

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development can be used to gain entry into a wide range of childcare related careers, including nursing, occupational therapy, social work, primary teaching and childcare.
