What are the aims of this course?
This course provides the basic knowledge and skills that you will need to progress onto higher level college courses in the area of childcare and child development. It covers all the basics you need to know before caring for children, including health and safety, physical and creative activities and communication and learning.
What are the areas covered by this course?
The course could include the study of the following areas:
- Children's safety and health
- Physical and emotional care needs of children
- Communication with children
- Children's learning
- Physical activities for children
- Creative activities and experiences for children
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level that is equivalent to GCSE grades D-F. Students will need a positive attitude, commitment and self motivation as they will be expected to complete a work placement. Entry Level courses are also available for those who want to progress to a Level 1 qualification but do not yet meet these requirements.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed by a range of methods including a portfolio of evidence, projects, assignments, coursework and practical assessments carried out in a childcare setting.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of the BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children you can progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.
What are the career opportunities?
The BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children can be used to progress onto higher level childcare courses that will help you gain entry into a childcare related job, including nursery nursing. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
