What are the aims of this course?

This vocational course offers an exploration of barbering and facial care as a career. It is a hands on practical course and training takes place in a salon environment using the college's own facilities.

What are the areas covered by this course?

The course includes study of the following units:
- Shampooing and conditioning hair
- Cutting men's hair
- Scalp massage and facial care
- Cutting facial hair
- Drying and finishing men's hair
- Creating basic patterns in hair
- Creating a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
- Health and safety

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Two GCSEs at grade C/D or above, plus a positive Record of Achievement/Progress File, or Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector NVQ Level 1, or Hairdressing City & Guilds Diploma at Level 2.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, assignments and written tests.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Barbering NVQ Diploma at Level 2 and a VTCT Level 2 Award in Facial Care for Men. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On successful completion of this course you can go on to do study a Level 3 qualification in barbering or the Hairdressing City & Guilds Diploma at Level 3. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.

What are the career opportunities?

This course can lead to entry into careers in hairdressing salons, barber's shops and similar establishments. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
