What are the aims of this course?
The animal care industry has grown considerably in recent years, largely owing to a greater public focus on animal health and welfare issues. As such, it is providing a wide range of challenging but fulfilling and rewarding career opportunities for individuals with the right qualifications. This course has been developed to provide entry and progression into animal care and husbandry industries that fall within the environmental and land-based sector.
What are the areas covered by this course?
Mandatory units are as follows:
- Undertaking work related experience in the land-based industries
- Maintaining animal accommodation
- Undertaking practical animal feeding
- Maintaining animal health and welfare
What are the areas covered by this course?
Optional units include:
- Principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling
- Basic principles of animal biology
- Conservation and improvement of British habitats
- Animal breeds and grooming
- Principles and practices of animal establishments
- Care of exotic animals
- Nursing of animals
- Caring for ornamental aquatics
- Caring for horses
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
Two GCSEs at grade C/D or above, plus a positive Record of Achievement/Progress File.
How is the course assessed?
Student work is assessed through a number of coursework assignments.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
You will be awarded a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care, students will be prepared for progression onto the BTEC level 3 Diploma in Animal Care. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during the course.
What are the career opportunities?
The course can lead to careers in the following areas: animal sanctuary assistant, boarding kennels and catteries assistant, city farm worker, dog handler, groom, pet superstore assistant, veterinary nurse, wildlife park assistant, or zoo keeper. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout the course.
