Employment initiatives

Back to Work

This is a scheme for people who have been out of work and claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance for at least six months. Working with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and JobCentrePlus, the college provides training for people who would like to update their skills or learn new ones.

New Roundhouse

The New Roundhouse project aims to help people aged 16-19 who not in employment, education or training (NEET) prepare for employment or further education. The project provides a 'Step-up' programme that gives students the opportunity to take part in vocational taster courses in hair and beauty, construction, art, IT and media. Also covered in the programme are functional skills and personal development sessions.

Pre-employment Training

The Manchester College is working with Manchester Primary Care Trust and the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust to provide a pre-employment training programme for people who are interested in roles as clinical support workers. The programme gives potential employees an idea of what the work would entail. They are given a two-week work trial at a hospital, as well as training in job seeking skills and a guaranteed interview for a clinical support worker role.

The programme is part of a Supported Employment Partnership funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and European Social Fund (ESF). It enables the college to work with employers across the North West to prepare potential employees for work with their organisations.

Response to Redundancy

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has responded to the economic downturn with flexible funded training options delivered by The Manchester College and nine other colleges, for people under threat of redundancy or who have been made redundant. A wide range of programmes is on offer, with a choice of locations. The emphasis is on updating skills and learning new ones.
