Art and design and fashion students at The Manchester College have taken part in an exciting assignment to mark the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Students from the north west produced work on the theme of ‘Global Threads’, some of which will be reproduced for sale in galleries across the region.
The assignment, set by the Gallery of Costume at Platt Hall and the Whitworth Art Gallery, is part of the nationwide Stories of the World project, with each region working to a different theme. The north west theme, Global Threads, commemorates the role of cotton in the region’s social and economic growth.
Students were asked to create art pieces on the Global Threads theme that could be used as designs for gallery merchandise. The Manchester College submitted work from our fashion and art and design students, and the judges selected a substantial number of our students’ work.
The work will now be reproduced to be sold in gallery shops across the north west
This work will now be reproduced as artefacts such as mugs, postcards and bookmarks to be sold in gallery shops across the north west. One group of students on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion produced a string of decorative bunting, which was so beautiful that Platt Hall asked if they could sell each individual piece as an original artwork.
The standard was very high indeed
Carolyn Stewart, Curriculum Lead Manager for Creative Arts at The Manchester College, said: ‘The standard was very high indeed and we are very proud that photographs of our students' artwork were so successful.’
