Students on Public Service courses at The Manchester College have collected over £7,500 for the Poppy Appeal. The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester thanked the students at a presentation at the college’s Openshaw Campus.

Principal Peter Tavernor welcomed Lord Lieutenant Warren Smith, who presented certificates on behalf of the Royal British Legion to thank the students for their tremendous support. Student Kyle Powell spoke on behalf of the students about their experience of fundraising and the public reaction to the appeal.

Over 40 students studying on Public Service courses at four of The Manchester College campuses (Moston, Harpurhey, Northenden and Openshaw) collected £7,836.14 at Manchester Piccadilly train station in November. The college raised an additional £1,034.94 from its outlets, making a college total of £8,871.08.

It was pleasing to see so many students collecting and showing the public that the young do care

‘The Manchester College’s support to this year's Poppy Appeal is truly invaluable. It was particularly pleasing to see the so many young students collecting and showing the public that the young do care. We are hoping this year to raise over £1 million in Greater Manchester to help those who have served, and in particular target those who have been injured, wounded or bereaved from Afghanistan,’ said Jeff Harrison, County Manager for the Royal British Legion in Greater Manchester.

Some students studying public services will wish to pursue a career in the armed forces and it is great to see them giving back to the people who have served

‘I am really proud of our public service students; they have raised a fantastic amount of money for a very good cause. Some of our students studying public services will wish to pursue a career in the armed forces and it is great to see them giving back to the people who have served,’ Barry Atkins, Curriculum Lead Manager, Health Care, Sport & Fitness at The Manchester College.
