Students paint iconic buildings of Manchester

A group of the college’s art and design students have produced a collection of stunning paintings depicting Manchester’s greatest buildings as part of a competition organised by Manchester firm, SLS Solicitors.

The 15 students, who study on the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design at the Moston Campus, were challenged to come up with artwork measuring one metre square that could be displayed within the company’s offices for one year.

To make the brief more interesting, the niche construction and engineering practice put up a prize fund of £500 to be split between the artists of their three favourite paintings.

The theme, 'Iconic buildings of Manchester', inspired unique representations of an array of buildings from all architectural periods, from Central Library right through to the new buildings of the Spinningfields development.

The staff and students were invited to a high profile presentation evening on 5th May, which was attended by a number of the firm’s clients and contacts.
Kate Whiteman won the first prize of £350 with her picture of Manchester Town Hall, Cody Helsby took the second place prize of £100 and Dina Bouguenna was awarded £50 for third. Plus, four of the students from the group received offers of work placements.

Carolyn Stewart, head of the department of creative arts said: ‘The solicitors were blown away with the work produced for the brief and one of the students even received a commission for more work at the presentation event. It was a huge confidence boost for the group and an impressive achievement that the participants can put on their CVs.’

Following the success of the competition, it is likely that the challenge will now take place as an annual event, with more students taking place in the future.
