Students’ art exhibition inspired by Bramall Hall

This week Bramall Hall is launching a special exhibition of student artwork inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the late nineteenth century.

Art and design students from The Manchester College’s Openshaw Campus created the pieces for the exhibition after visiting the famous Tudor manor house in Bramall Park, Stockport, earlier this year and taking inspiration from its extraordinary interior and architectural design.

The students drew upon their own research into the Arts and Crafts Movement and the work of George Faulkner Armitage, who designed the entire interior of the hall in the late nineteenth century, to create their own artistic interpretations. The resulting exhibition comprises decorative textile art forms made from a range of textile materials including Batik, coiling, appliqué, hand and machine embroidery.

Eve Robinson, the textile course tutor for the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design said: ‘It has been a great experience for the students to work on a project which links them directly to the work of an historically important local designer whose work they can see in context.

‘In the initial stages they had to liaise with professionals and curators at the hall and carry out primary research into the history of the building to get an insight into the styles of art and design used. The project was very successful in that it enabled the students to apply the techniques they had learnt in the classroom to a real live brief for industry.’

The exhibition will open on Friday 2nd July and will close on Monday August 2nd 2010.

Collections access officer, Laura Wigg-Bailly, said: ‘I have been very impressed by the standard and originality of the work produced by the students this year. It is wonderful for visitors to get the opportunity to look at the hall through the artists’ eyes, and I think the students have responded well to their brief which was to produce work reflecting the Arts and Crafts movement influences which run through the hall’s interior design.’
