Abbie Stirrup, a fashion design student at The Manchester College, has been offered a place on a prestigious international degree course. Abbie's end of year show exhibit at Openshaw Campus includes work that recognises the beauty of old age.
Abbie is looking forward to a four-year degree course in fashion design at the Amsterdam School of Fashion. The school attracts talented students from all over the world. The course is taught in English, but students also take Dutch survival lessons to help them with day-to-day life in Amsterdam.
I think it's wrong that people think they've got to look perfect
Among Abbie’s exhibits at the Openshaw Campus end of year show is an outfit inspired by beauty in old age. Abbie says: ‘The fabric is like wrinkled skin and grey hair. I think it’s wrong that people think they’ve got to look perfect and dye their hair. For my exhibition I’ve got photographs of my Nana with her wrinkled skin, showing that that’s beautiful, rather than showing a perfect face.’ Abbie will model her own outfits at the end of year show, including a headdress representing grey hair.
If you want to get somewhere in life you've got to put the work in
Abbie’s advice to other students is: ‘work hard and put effort into everything you do. If you want to get somewhere in life you’ve got to put the work in.’
Abbie is contacting businesses to seek sponsorship to fund her studies.
