Openshaw students exercise their thumbs for charity

Games development students at The Manchester College came up with a novel way of raising money for charity. They took part in a sponsored 12-hour game-playing marathon for Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The marathon was part of the college's Making a Positive Contribution week.

Students on the Extended Diploma in Games Development contacted the fundraising department at the hospital with the idea. They wanted to raise money to provide patients with consoles to aid their recovery through activity and movement. The hospital thought it was a fantastic idea and donated t-shirts, sponsorship forms and donation buckets for their event.

Dorike Adessunloye, games design tutor at Openshaw Campus, said: “I’m really proud of all the students who have taken part in this great fundraising activity. They’ve all worked really hard to ensure that it has been a success.”

Students set up Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep sponsors up to date with the progress of the event. Some students even baked cakes to raise extra funds and help the marathon gamers keep their strength up!

The games consoles will be presented to the hospital in January and the students will be accepting donations until then.
