Students on the VRQ 1 and VRQ 2 in professional cookery at The Manchester College's Fielden Campus have been crowned North West Champions at the Brakes Student Chef Challenge Competition.
Laura Daniels, Jessica Jackson and Robert Summerville beat off stiff competition from seven other colleges in the north west to gain their title at the leading culinary competition held at Sheffield College. The team prepared an innovative three course menu using locally sourced Lancashire produce.

Jessica produced a fantastic scallop with poached barley dish. It was her first competition and she felt a little bit nervous but was supported by her team mates and soon got into the swing of things. Laura produced the main course of lamb loin cooked at 59 degrees to ensure it was extra tender. It was served with a mini lamb kidney pie and sweet baby vegetables and was a great success. Robert produced a sublime dessert which was a new take on and old Lancashire favourite – a tipsy Eccles cake ice cream with a Leagram’s cheese soufflé.

The team will now be taking part in the final of the competition on 27th February at the London Olympia hotel where they will be competing against other regional winners for the title of UK Champions. Good luck team!!
