Fashion student’s skills are Euro class

A student on the Foundation Degree Fashion and Clothing Technology course at The Manchester College reached the national finals of the EuroSkills international skills competition. 24-year-old Charlotte Straker is retraining at the College for her dream career in fashion.

Charlotte’s tutor encouraged her to enter the EuroSkills competition, which showcases a range of professional skills. Based on designs for a garment, Charlotte was one of four entrants chosen to compete in the national final in Warwick. Charlotte competed in the final for a place in the British EuroSkills team by making patterns and constructing her garment.

I love the course. It’s really great to be doing something creative, it’s lots of fun and I have learnt technical skills that I couldn’t have learned at home.

Charlotte is in her second year on the Fashion and Clothing Technology course, a welcome step towards her dream career: ‘I have always wanted to do fashion but I ended up in a career in mathematical analysis. I love this course - it’s really great to be doing something creative, it’s lots of fun and I have learnt technical skills that I couldn’t have learnt at home. The tutors and my friends on the course are great and they have been really helpful with the competition.’

Charlotte has done us proud

Fashion tutor, Ruth Sanderson, said: ‘When I was asked to suggest a student for the competition Charlotte immediately came to mind. She has been a consistently hard worker and has always achieved a very high standard. Charlotte is an exceptionally positive person and is never fazed by any challenge we set her. As a programme team we feel Charlotte has done us proud to get as far in the competition as she has, and has represented the course as an excellent example.'
