Driving to success at The Manchester College!
Student taxi drivers at The Manchester College have celebrated their achievements with an awards ceremony. Drivers who successfully completed NVQ Level 2 Road Passenger Vehicle Driving (taxi and private hire) celebrated at Manchester Town Hall.
The Road Passenger Vehicle Driving course is aimed at taxi drivers who wish to achieve an industry recognised qualification. The course is built around the National Occupational Standards developed by GoSkills. It includes a range of units that are required by the industry such as customer service, and transporting passengers safely.

The award ceremony at Manchester Town Hall was attended by over 150 drivers. Guest speakers included local Councillor June Hitchen and David Patterson, Vice Principal for Adult Learners at The Manchester College
The taxi drivers were very proud of their achievements. Driver Chris Pearson said: ‘I haven’t done any studying for a long time so returning to college felt like a daunting experience. However The Manchester College tutors were very supportive and welcoming. I enjoyed studying so much that I have now enrolled on a literacy course.’
The team at the college are changing the way taxi drivers see themselves as a major service provider
Julie McColgan, taxi tutor said: ‘It was another fantastic year of achievement by all our students. I feel really proud to be part of a team of people here at the college who are making such a difference and changing the way taxi drivers react and see themselves as a major service provider within our great city. Excellence and quality service is always essential when working in this tough economic environment and our students should now be better placed to move on and look forward to the new year.’
The taxi drivers’ course is now in its fourth year and continues to be a success. Satisfied drivers who have completed the course have spread the word amongst the taxi industry in Manchester
