Students at The Manchester College's Openshaw Campus met members of the Team GB Bobsleigh squad during the team’s recent media event, held in the impressive automotive workshops at the campus.
Pilot Lammin Deen was joined by team mates Richard Sharman and Dave Smith, to thank automotive students for the work they have done on the team’s bobsleighs. The students, who are enrolled on Vehicle Body and Paint Operations diploma courses, have been working on 2-man and 4-man bobsleighs, respraying and repairing bodywork as part of a sponsorship deal with the college.
Umar Khan, 19, from Crumpsall said: “Working on the Team GB bobsleigh is definitely an inspiration. It’s been an interesting thing for us to do because there are more curves than on a car and it’s something that you don’t get to do every day.”
As well as thanking the students and giving them an insight into the challenges of bobsleigh competition at the highest level, the team spoke to various media channels in a bid to raise more sponsorship to aid their quest for success.
Working on the Team GB bobsleigh is definitely an inspiration. It's something you don't get to do every day.
With many of the leading countries’ teams, such as Germany and Russia, receiving much higher levels of funding from their governments, Lammin and his team need to rely on sponsorship deals to keep their ambitions alive.
Future competitions for the team include the British Championship, the World Championship and hopefully the Winter Olympics in 2014. Visit www.britishbobsleighteam.co.uk to keep up to date on their progress.
