Laura Miller, an art and design student at The Manchester College, shows great dedication by travelling from Yorkshire with her coursework - a full-sized chair.
Laura takes the train from Dewsbury three days a week to study at the Shena Simon Campus in Manchester. She transferred to The Manchester College after she found she didn’t enjoy the graphics course she had started closer to home.
People say "why can't you sit in your chair while I sit in your seat?!"
The journey can be unpleasant and is proof of Laura’s dedication. She said: ‘I have arguments with people about the chair all the time. People say “why can’t you sit in your chair while I sit in your seat?!” People bang into it so every time I take it home I have to repaint it.’ In spite of this, Laura thinks transporting the chair to and from home is the best thing to do. As well as working on the chair at home, she takes advantage of the facilities and support at college.
Put everything you've got into your course because if you don't put in, you don't get out
Laura is restoring the chair as part of her coursework and has made decorative cushions to go with it. She is staying on at The Manchester College for the second year of her course, then plans to apply to university. She would like to train as an architect or look for work with a graphics company.
Her advice to students considering an art course is; ‘put everything you’ve got into it because if you don’t put in, you don’t get out.’
Students at Shena Simon Campus will be exhibiting their work at the end of year show on 16th June.
