Celebrity chef champions cooking skills

Celebrity chef, James Martin, visited The Manchester College to judge the north west heat of the Red Tractor Beef and Lamb Mmmake it with Mince Challenge. Jaina Mistry, a student from Manchester, was named regional winner and will compete in the national final. The challenge aims to inspire people under 25 to cook simple recipes.

James Martin presents the weekend cookery and chat show, Saturday Kitchen. The national winner will travel to London and join James on a tour of two top restaurants. They will also get to go behind the scenes and see a live episode of Saturday Kitchen being filmed. The competition was open to 11-16 year olds.

A recent study showed that 60% of young people leave home without the skills to cook a basic meal. The Red Tractor competition aims to inspire young people to learn five basic recipes by the age of 25.

It's more important than ever to inspire young people to cook properly. I hope Jaina's success will encourage more young people to get cooking.

Jaina, 14, a student at Stockport Grammar wowed the judges with her meatball curry with salad and naan. The judges awarded points for originality, nutrition and presentation. Jaina won a touch screen media player and £200 for her school.

James Martin said: ‘Jaina’s recipe was innovative, nutritious and well-presented – but, most importantly, it tasted great! It’s more important than ever to inspire young people to cook properly. This challenge is a perfect platform for them to learn about food, cooking and nutrition. I hope Jaina’s success will encourage more young people from the local area to get cooking.’
