Award-winning sitcom pilot features student make-up designs

A student at The Manchester College has designed the hair, make-up and costumes for an award-winning sitcom pilot. 'Boxed' won Best Sitcom Pilot 2011 at the first COFILMIC Comedy Film Festival. Adele Maguire, who is studying media make-up design at the college, created the designs and worked on location.

COFILMIC is a new festival, promoting emerging talent in film comedy. The awards were announced at a ceremony at Manchester’s Comedy Store.

Boxed was directed by Paul Murphy who works on Hollyoaks, Casualty and Waterloo Road. Adele designed the hair, make-up and costume for the programme. She worked with the production team and actors before filming and was on standby on the shoot for touch-ups. She also kept records for continuity.

If the pilot sitcom is commissioned for a series there will be an opportunity for paid work

Adele said: ‘I have previously worked on short films with Paul Fox who is an actor and the producer of the sitcom. Paul contacted me and asked if I would help him out on this production, which I was more than happy to do!

‘I was very proud to be involved with the production of an award-winning sitcom. All the hard work was worth it. If the pilot sitcom is commissioned for a series there will be an opportunity for paid work.’

Joanne Suddes, another student at The Manchester College helped Adele with the actors’ hair and make-up.

The course covers a wide range of skills, such as airbrushing, period hair and make-up and set etiquette

Adele is 29 and is studying on the Foundation Degree in Design – Media Make-up at The Manchester College. She hopes to work as a hair and make-up artist in TV and film.

Adele said: ‘If you’re considering a career in make-up I would recommend studying this course. All of our tutors are currently working in the industry and are able to offer expert advice and help with our future career goals. There are lots of opportunities for work experience and the course covers a wide range of skills such as airbrushing, camouflage, period hair and make-up, set etiquette and script blocking.’
