At the end of March, Aaron Predergast represented the North West in the regional team for the Special Olympics Great Britain National Indoor Athletics Competition held at Cardiff University. The national event attracted around 200 competitors with a range of learning needs and disabilities from across the country. He competed in two events; the 60m run and shot putting, gaining a bronze medal for each event.
Aaron, aged 19, from Levenshulme is studying Skills for Working Life Certificate (Information and Communication Technology and Business) at The Manchester College’s Openshaw Campus. He is no stranger to competitive athletics; he has competed at the annual Disability Sport Events (DSE) National Junior Athletics Championships for four years running and has won gold medals at this event. Aaron recently competed in the regional qualifiers for the DSE National Junior Athletics Championships 2010 which will be held in Blackpool at the beginning of July. He is now awaiting news to see if he will represent the North West again.
‘I enjoy taking part in the events and if I continue the way I am, I hope to gain a place in the 2012 Paralympics,’ said Aaron.
Youth worker at The Manchester College, Lesa Duncan, said: ‘Aaron has done brilliantly this year in college with his studies and also outside of college, representing the North West in national sporting events.’
