Accommodation - international students

We can help you find comfortable, secure accommodation that's within easy travelling distance of your campus.

Accommodation choices at The Manchester College

There are three types of accommodation for international students. These are:

  • homestay
  • rented houses, apartments or houseshares
  • private halls of residence

Please note: If you’re under 18 we will place you with a family unless your parent or guardian gives written consent for you to live in another type of accommodation. We strongly recommend that all international students stay in registered homestay accommodation for at least the first term. In our experience, students settle into life in the UK more quickly if they live with a host family first.

Deposits

Whichever type of accommodation you choose, you’ll usually be asked to pay a deposit. The deposit is refunded at the end of your stay, provided:

  • you haven’t caused any damage to the accommodation
  • you have paid all rent and any bills

The amount you pay as a deposit can vary, but is often equivalent to 4-6 weeks’ rent. Please contact the international office before paying a deposit if you are unsure. You should always get a receipt for your deposit.

Homestay accommodation

You share a home with a family. You have your own bedroom and share other facilities.

The price of homestay usually includes:

  • your own bedroom
  • breakfast and evening meal during the week
  • all meals at the weekend, if you need them
  • heating and other utility bills

Self-catering homestay

You share a home with a family but you buy and cook your own food. Self catering homestay usually includes:

  • your own bedroom
  • heating and other utility bills

Costs

Homestay costs a minimum of £112 per week. Self-catering homestay costs a minimum of £65 per week.

You’ll need to pay a deposit of £250 for homestay and self-catering homestay.

Rented houses, apartments and sharing

We can give you details of rented houses, apartments and house shares with other students.

In a rented house or apartment you do your own cooking and cleaning. You have your own room and usually share the bathroom and kitchen.

You will pay:

  • rent (to your landlord)
  • heating and other utility bills

Rent is usually at least £75 per week, excluding bills.

You may also need to pay council tax. This is a charge for community services such as the police, fire brigade and rubbish collection.

You should receive a receipt for your rent and deposit and your landlord should keep records of your payments.

Your tenancy (agreed stay) in a rented house or apartment will be for a minimum of ten months.

The landlord should ask you to sign an inventory (list of the items in the accommodation).

Private halls of residence

Private halls are large student residences run by private organisations. They’re available to full time students from all over the world and the UK, from any college or university.

You have your own room and usually share a kitchen. In some halls you have your own bathroom and in others you share a bathroom. You buy and cook your own food.

The cost of private halls is usually at least £85 per week.
