What are the aims of this course?

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in AS/A Level Art and Design and to act as preparation for entrance to university. You will work from observation with a range of materials including oils, gouache, watercolours, pastels, collage and montage. Within the AS programme there is the opportunity to specialise in one of the following areas: graphic design, textiles, fine art or photography.

What are the areas covered by this course?

The course includes the study of the following:
- Drawing and painting from life
- Colour theory - formal elements of art and design
- Composition
- Still life
- Critical studies - written analysis

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Five GCSEs at grade C or four at grade B, including Maths and English.

How is the course assessed?

You will be assessed by examinations and coursework.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded an AS Level in Art and Design and an A Level Art and Design. You will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

Successful completion of the course, in combination with other AS Levels, A Levels or BTEC Nationals, can lead directly to a wide range of higher education courses. Advice on opportunities for further study will be provided during your course.

What are the career opportunities?

AS/A Level Art and Design can be used in a wide variety of career areas, including architecture, design (graphic, textile, fashion, furniture, 3D etc), advertising and teaching. Specialist careers advice will be available from our Advice and Guidance Team throughout your course.
