What's the New Media Design course about?

Electronic media has entered a new era where design is becoming more televisual and content creation increasingly important. This working environment requires flexible and multi-skilled designers who can create moving-image and interactive products for contemporary media platforms and formats. On this course, students learn the skills employers are looking for by producing motion graphics, websites, short films, social media, DVDs, and outdoor and mobile content for a wide range of commercial, public and community clients. Working on a series of studio projects, students generate and develop creative ideas which are executed professionally using industry-standard software, such as Adobe's Creative Suite and Apple's Final Cut Studio. A series of guest lectures brings top creative practitioners into college to demonstrate current work and discuss their career paths in the new media design world. There are many opportunities to produce work for particular target audiences through live briefs from external clients and organisations. The college's strong links with industry enables students to undertake work placements in a range of studios/agencies in Manchester, the north west or London as part of the second year curriculum. There are opportunities to enter work into national design competitions, such as D&AD and YCN as part of the curriculum and students are also required to stage a final exhibition of their work.
Subjects covered include: - Concept development - Storyboarding - Photography - Digital video - Audio
- Lighting - Typography - Digital compositing - Copywriting - Marketing and usability
Assessment is through 80% practical work and 20% written assignments. Students are also assessed on a final exhibition.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

Students will be equipped to work directly in the design industry. Successful graduates will also have the opportunity to progress to the final year in the following MMU undergraduate programmes: BA (Hons) Design and Art Direction; BA (Hons) Interactive Arts; BA (Hons) Photography; BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design; BA (Hons) Contemporary Film and Video; BA (Hons) Creative Practice.
