What's the Computer System Support course about?

This foundation degree is designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to maintain and repair computer equipment and systems. The course is ideal for repair and maintenance professionals (IT technicians) currently in employment, who would like to develop their skills and obtain a higher level qualification, or for anyone who would like to begin a career in repair and maintenance. Students develop highly technical and specialist skills, in addition to business awareness skills, which are taught at the request of employers involved in the design of the programme. The Manchester College is approved by The Open University as an appropriate organisation to offer higher education programmes leading to Open University Validated Awards. This programme in computer system support has been developed and will be delivered by The Manchester College. It has been validated through a process of external peer review, by The Open University, as being of an appropriate standard and quality to lead to Open University Validated Award of Foundation Degree in Computer System Support (OUVA).

Assessment is continuous and a variety of methods are used to monitor progression.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

The foundation degree prepares graduates for a wide range of careers, including corporate help desk technician, PC repair and maintenance bench technician, PC repair and maintenance field technician and IT services manager. Alternatively, students may wish to carry on their studies and top up the foundation degree to a full honours degree at a university.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants are required to have a BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in an IT-related subject area, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 100. Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
