Qualification type:
Access to Higher Education Diploma
What's the Archaeology and History course about?
Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for higher education. They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study.
In addition to studying the main subjects, you will have the opportunity to study literacy, numeracy and information technology and GCSE English and Maths. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including classroom-based teaching, group work, individual tutorials, outside visits, videos and printed handouts.
The daytime course is made up of four modules:
- Core
- Ancient history (Greek and Roman)
- Middle East archaeology
- Archaeology
The evening course is made up of three modules:
- Core
- Ancient history
- Archaeology
All units are assessed and graded. Assessment is continuous and ranges from traditional essays and examinations, to projects and presentations.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
In the past, students have progressed onto university courses such as archaeology, ancient history, history and other related studies. Career opportunities exist as freelance or full-time employed archaeologists but many graduates in archaeology and ancient history use their academic skills in other areas of work such as teaching, journalism and law.
What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you will need to go through an Initial Assessment process which will help us to place you on the correct course and identify any possible support needs that you might have. Also, you will need to demonstrate to the course tutor that you have the commitment and skills necessary to successfully complete the course. Applicants wishing to progress into higher education need to be aware that some higher education institutions may have additional entry requirements (e.g. GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above), in addition to the Access to HE Diploma.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Archaeology and History course?
This course enables the learner to obtain a level 3 Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to higher education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for higher education.
