What's the Accident and Safety Management course about?

This course is designed for local authority road safety officers, traffic accident investigation officers, traffic accident investigators, police traffic accident investigation officers, traffic engineers, experienced driving instructors and others with a professional involvement in the area of road safety and/or accident investigation/accident prevention.

The minimum number of successfully completed modules needed to gain the award is eight, although individual modules may be studied if preferred. Students will study with the aid of distance learning packages combined with tutorial support by letter, telephone and e-mail. In addition there will be four compulsory residential schools.

Mandatory units:
- Management and principles of English law
- Accident analysis
- Psychological perspectives of behaviour and learning theory
- Roads, Traffic and Transportation
- Transport and the Environment
- Research Document: Aspects of Accident and Safety Management

Students also cover a maximum of three optional units:
- Human factors engineering
- Accident investigation and reconstruction
- Public relations and advertising
- Vehicle technology

You will be assessed by written assignment and an open book examination or extended assignment for each module.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

To enrol on the course students should be 21 years or over and hold one A Level or equivalent and ideally GCSE Maths and English. It is preferable that students have a minimum of three years' relevant work experience. Applications are encouraged from those who may be able to evidence equable alternative qualifications.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Accident and Safety Management course?

You will gain an Edexcel Advanced Professional Development Diploma in Accident and Safety Management, comparable to NVQ Level 5. A Certificate of Achievement is available from Edexcel for modules studied on a stand-alone basis.
