Staff Profile: Nigel Hercules - inspirational teacher

Nigel Hercules teaches maths and electrical engineering at The Manchester College. He co-ordinates the new international Access to Engineering course and recently won the Foundation Year Inspirational Teaching Award. Nigel was an Access student himself and recommends Access courses to adults wanting to return to education.

‘I arrived in this country in 1998 from the volcanic stricken island of Montserrat. Wanting to further my studies, I enrolled into MANCAT (now part of The Manchester College) to study Access to Computer Science and Engineering. I went on to the University of Manchester where I obtained my first degree in electrical and electronic engineering.

My proudest moment has been winning an inspirational teaching award

‘After graduating I started teaching in the same department I had studied in at MANCAT. This prompted me to study even further and, while I worked with the college, I obtained my PGCE from the University of Huddersfield.

‘My proudest moment so far was when I won the Foundation Year Inspirational Teaching Award for teaching maths to students at MMU. I was really humbled by the fact that students felt that way about me.

I would recommend Access to any adult who is thinking of returning to education

‘It was really daunting to return to education after a long time, but the Access course was tailored to suit my situation and there were other people on the course who felt the same way! I certainly would recommend it to any adult who is thinking of returning to education.'
