What are the aims of this course?
Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Advanced Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college by day release (one day per month). Supporting teaching and learning in schools apprentices work towards a nationally-recognised, work-based CACHE qualification.
What are the areas covered by this course?
The Advanced Apprenticeship covers the following:
- Planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher
- Bilingual and special needs support
- Personal development and reflective practice
- Employer rights and responsibilities
- Personal learning and thinking skills
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
Competition for places with employers can be fierce, so applicants will need to show that they are committed, happy to work as part of a team and individually, and able to use their own initiative. You must have experience within an education support role or a relevant level 2 qualification and be working in a childcare setting for at least 30 hours per week.

How is the course assessed?
An assessor will assess your practical competence by observing you in the workplace. You will also produce written assignments for your CACHE portfolio and for your key skills qualifications. You will take Key Skills tests in communication, application of number and ICT and you will complete a workbook about employers' rights and responsibilities.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
- Functional Skills/Key Skills in Application of Number, Communication and ICT
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On successful completion of this course there are a number of opportunities for further study. It can lead to career progression within primary, secondary or special schools or progression on to HNC/Ds, foundation degrees or degree courses.
What are the career opportunities?
Apprentices who have finished their training may be able to progress to become a higher level teaching assistant working within primary, secondary or special schools.
