What are the aims of this course?

Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college by day release or over a number of days in a block. Pharmacy apprentices work towards a nationally-recognised competence based qualification and also a knowledge-based qualification.

What are the areas covered by this course?

The BTEC Level 2 Certificate covers the following mandatory units:
- Communicating with pharmacy customers
- Law, regulation, health and safety in pharmacy
- Working in the pharmacy team

Plus optional units from the following:
- Ordering and issuing stock in the pharmacy
- Receiving, storing and maintaining stock in the pharmacy
- Preparing for and manufacture of aseptic products
- Assisting in the preparation, manufacture and assembly of medicinal products
- Selling over the counter medicines in the pharmacy
- Processing a prescription
- Assembling prescriptions safely

What are the areas covered by this course?

The NVQ Certificate covers the following tasks:
- Assisting with the provision of pharmacy services
- Assisting with the sale of medicines and products
- Receiving prescriptions from individuals
- Ordering, receiving, maintaining and assisting with the issue of pharmaceutical stock
- Assembling and assisting with the issuing of prescribed items
- Assisting with the manufacture and assembly of medicinal products
- Assisting with the preparation of documentation, materials and other items for manufacture

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

You must be working in a hospital or community pharmacy for a minimum of 16 hours per week. You will also undertake a numeracy and literacy assessment to check that you are able to work at this level.

How is the course assessed?

You will be assessed through work-based evidence, compiled as a portfolio, and practical assignments.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- Edexcel Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills
- Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science
- Functional Skills/Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On completion of the Pharmacy Apprenticeship at level 2 apprentices can go on to complete the Pharmacy Advanced Apprenticeship at level 3.

What are the career opportunities?

Qualified apprentices will be able to work as a dispensing assistant or pharmacy assistant as part of a pharmacy team, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in order to provide medicines for patients in a safe and correct manner. On completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship, you would be qualified to become a pharmacy technician or you could go on to further study at level 4 or above.
