What are the aims of this course?
Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college by day release or over a number of days in a block. Exercise and fitness apprentices work towards a nationally-recognised competence based qualification and also a knowledge-based qualification.
What are the areas covered by this course?
The NVQ Diploma covers the following:
- Anatomy and physiology for exercise
- Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
- Principles of exercise, fitness and health
- Work with clients to help them adhere to exercise and physical
activity
- Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity
- Plus optional units
What are the areas covered by this course?
The CYQ Certificate covers the following:
- Bones and joints
- Muscles and muscle actions
- Cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- Components of fitness
- How to plan and teach safe and effective exercise sessions
- The principles of training
- How to adapt exercise to suit varied fitness levels
- How to use a range of teaching skills
- The body's systems and its response to exercise
- Health and safety factors
- How to motivate and support clients
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
Competition for places with employers can be fierce, so applicants will need to show that they are committed, happy to work as part of a team and individually, and able to use their own initiative.
How is the course assessed?
The apprenticeship is assessed through a combination of work-based evidence compiled as a portfolio, worksheets, practicals involving planning, teaching and evaluating, and a theory paper.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness
- CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing
- Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of the Instructing Exercise and Fitness Apprenticeship at level 2 apprentices can go on to complete the Instructing Exercise and Fitness Advanced Apprenticeship.
What are the career opportunities?
Apprentices who have completed their training can work as a holiday centre worker, leisure centre assistant, sports development officer, outdoor activities instructor, or sports coach. On completion of the advanced apprenticeship at level 3 there may be opportunities to progress to supervisory or managerial positions, move into self-employment, or become a trainer.
