What are the aims of this course?
Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Advanced Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college either by day release or over a number of days in a block. Horticulture advanced apprentices work towards a work-based qualification in horticulture.
What are the areas covered by this course?
Advanced apprentices cover the following:
- Estimating and programming resource requirements for landscaping
- Promoting, monitoring and maintaining health, safety and security of the workplace
- Managing your own resources
- Plus some additional units from your chosen pathway
What qualifications do I need to do this course?
Applicants should be qualified to level 2 in horticulture or have equivalent industry experience. Basic numeracy and literacy skills are also required.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through practical work, theory work and portfolio building. Assessments will include observation of practice and witness testimonies.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- NPTC Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture
- Functional Skills/Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?
On completion advanced apprentices can progress onto management level studies.
What are the career opportunities?
The Advanced Apprenticeship can lead on to management/supervisory positions within the horticulture sector.
