What are the aims of this course?

Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college by day release (one day per month). Children and Young People's Workforce apprentices work towards the nationally recognised CACHE Certificate.

What are the areas covered by this course?

The Apprenticeship covers the following:
- Contributing to positive relationships
- Helping to keep children safe
- Supporting children's development
- Using support to develop own practice in children's care, learning and development
- Preparing and maintaining environments to meet children's needs
- Supporting children's play and learning
- Paediatric first aid
- Food hygiene
- Employer rights and responsibilities
- Personal learning and thinking skills

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Competition for places with employers can be fierce, so applicants will need to show that they are committed, happy to work as part of a team and individually, and able to use their own initiative. Applicants will also need to be working in a childcare setting for at least 30 hours per week. If you are successful in enrolling on this course, you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) application form. How is the course assessed?

An assessor will assess your practical competence by observing you in the workplace. You will also produce written assignments for your children and young people's workforce portfolio and a portfolio of evidence for your key skills qualifications. You will take key skills tests in communication, application of number and ICT and you will complete a workbook about employers' rights and responsibilities.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- CACHE Level 2 Certificate for the Children and the Young People's Workforce
- Functional Skills/Key Skills in Application of Number, Communication and ICT
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
- Paediatric First Aid Certificate
- Food hygiene Certificate

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On completion of the Children and Young People's Workforce Apprenticeship at level 2 apprentices can go on to complete the Children and Young People's Workforce Advanced Apprenticeship at level 3.

What are the career opportunities?

Apprentices who have completed their training can work in a number of childcare settings, or as a childminder, nursery nurse, school lunchtime supervisor, teaching assistant/learning support assistant. Alternatively, they could go on to complete further training in a college or university.
