What are the aims of this course?

Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within college by day release. Activity leadership apprentices work towards a nationally-recognised competence based qualification and also a knowledge-based qualification.

What are the areas covered by this course?

The NVQ Certificate covers the following:
- Contributing to the work of your team
- Promoting safety in the sport and activity environment
- Preparing for a session
- Leading a session
- Concluding and reviewing a session
- Plus optional units

What are the areas covered by this course?

The NCFE Certificate covers the following:
- Understanding the fundamentals of coaching sport
- Understanding how to develop participant(s) through coaching sport
- Supporting participant(s)' lifestyle through coaching sport
- Understanding the principles of safe coaching practice
- Assist in the delivery of a sports activity session

What qualifications do I need to do this course?

Competition for places with employers can be fierce, so applicants will need to show that they are committed, happy to work as part of a team and individually, and able to use their own initiative. Applicants will undertake an initial assessment prior to enrolment to ensure the programme is right for them.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through portfolio based evidence.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?

At the end of the programme apprentices will have achieved:
- City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership
- NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Principles and Preparation for Coaching Sport
- Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed this course?

On completion of the Activity Leadership Apprenticeship at level 2 apprentices can go on to complete the Activity Leadership Advanced Apprenticeship.

What are the career opportunities?

The apprenticeship could lead to career progression in jobs that involve coaching children and adults, enabling people with disabilities to take part in activities, or coordinating adventurous activities. On completion of the advanced apprenticeship at level 3 there may be opportunities to progress to supervisory or managerial positions, move into self-employment, or become a trainer.
