Lucy's going far with a creative apprenticeship

Lucy Hill, 19, is an apprentice in creative and cultural practice at The Manchester College. She's following the live events and promotion 'pathway'. Lucy works and trains four days a week as an events assistant at Marketing Manchester. She'll be travelling to France soon to help out with registration and marketing at a large conference.

Lucy went to Newton High School in Newton-le-Willows. She did her A levels at St Aelred’s Catholic Technology College, also in Newton-le-Willows.

She is now studying on the live events and promotion pathway of an apprenticeship in creative and cultural practice.

‘I work as an apprentice at a company called Marketing Manchester. I’m an events assistant. We’re a marketing agency and our job is to promote Manchester on a national and international level.

‘I help people to organise events. I have a presence at the events to ensure no problems arise and if they do I'm on hand to deal with them alongside the events team.

I actually get to go to France! It'll be a really good opportunity.

‘We have a couple of big conferences coming up. There’s one in France and I’m doing a lot of admin work for that. I actually get to go to France! It’ll be a really good opportunity. We’ll be responsible for registering the delegates, all their branding, logos and accommodation. When we get there, we promote Manchester at our stand and people can reserve sessions for networking.

‘I’m at work four days a week and come in to college on a Wednesday. At college we’ll have a morning session with one tutor and an afternoon session with another tutor. We do written assignments in our own time.

‘We have a lot of discussion in class. There are different pathways included in the creative skills apprenticeship area. There are technicians, people working in galleries, people working in music… It’s really interesting to find out what other people are doing.

‘Ultimately I want to be a wedding planner but I think I’ve got a long way to go before I do that! I like the work I do now and I’d also be interested in working in a hotel as part of a conference team.

You don't have to go to university to get a qualification

‘The staff at The Manchester College are really good. All the information they give us is 100% helpful. We can access it any time because we’ve got so many options including an online e-portfolio. It’s easy to communicate with your tutor.’

Lucy’s advice to someone considering an apprenticeship is: ‘You don’t have to go to university to get a qualification. If you’re more practical this is definitely the pathway you should take.'
