This course is designed to provide a sound subject and underpinning knowledge base for teaching literacy in further education/adult and community learning/work based learning.
It promotes personal and professional development, encourages critical reflection on personal and professional practice and enhances the quality of teaching and learning.
The course is delivered through group discussions, presentations, research, resource development, and sharing good practice.
You will study the following mandatory modules:
- Approaches to literacy learning and teaching
- Theories and frameworks for literacy learning and teaching
- Teaching practice portfolio
Plus one optional unit:
Selection of topics relevant to candidate's vocational area to be discussed with tutor.
The course is assessed through Continuous Formative and Summative Assessment. A teaching practice portfolio and assignment portfolio must be completed.
On successful completion of this course there are a range of opportunities for further study, including a range of English/literacy degrees. It will also enable you to teach literacy in a specialist role in further education, adult and community learning, or work based learning settings.
Applicants must have a PGCE/Cert Ed qualification or be working towards a level 5 initial teacher training qualification. Applicants must also have a literacy qualification at level 3 or above and access to 75 hours of Teaching Practice.
You will be awarded the Level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching Literacy in the Lifelong Learning Sector (ADTLLS) by City & Guilds.
All units must be completed satisfactorily for candidates to be certified at Level 5. Modules will be delivered with regard to LLUK Teaching and Learning Standards.
