What's the Nursing and Midwifery course about?
Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for higher education (HE). They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study.
In addition to studying the core modules, you will have the opportunity to study literacy, numeracy and information technology. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical laboratory sessions and private study based on a weekly timetable.
The course is made up of four modules:
- Core
- Health sciences (1)
- Health sciences (2)
- Health studies and psychology
This is a daytime course and you can study over one or two years on either a full-time or part-time basis. All classes will take place between 9.15am and 3.45 pm.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
In the past, students have progressed onto university courses, such as: the Diploma in Nursing (adult, child and mental health) and degrees in nursing and midwifery, food and nutrition, and health and social care. Career opportunities exist in various branches of nursing, allied health professions and community health work. Evidence of relevant paid or work experience would be an advantage in supporting your application.
What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
You will need to go through an Initial Assessment process which will help us to place you on the correct course and identify any possible support needs that you might have. Also, you will need to demonstrate to the course tutor that you have the commitment and skills necessary to successfully complete the course.
Applicants wishing to progress into higher education need to be aware that some higher education institutions (HEIs) may have additional entry requirements (e.g. GCSE Maths and English - grade C or above), in addition to the Access to HE Diploma. It is advisable to check with the HEIs to which you intend applying, as this may require a longer period of study before you go to university.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Nursing and Midwifery course?
This course enables the learner to obtain an Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to higher education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for higher education.
