What's the Medicine course about?
Access to HE Diplomas are designed to prepare mature learners for higher education (HE). They have been specifically designed for people who may have little in the way of formal educational qualifications, but who bring to the course a variety of life and work experience, a desire to learn and a willingness to study. This course has been developed, with the support of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester, to prepare students to pursue a range of health related degree courses. A supportive learning environment is provided by using a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical laboratory sessions and private study.
The course is made up of four modules:
- Core
- Health sciences: biology
- Chemistry
- Physics/Maths
All units are assessed and graded. Assessment is continuous and ranges from formal written examinations to seminars, practical reports and project work.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
In the past, students have progressed onto university courses and careers, not only in medicine but also health care, biomedical science, veterinary science or any other health-related areas. Many of these courses require you to have experience of either paid or voluntary work in the area of health and social care. What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
Increasingly medical schools are asking for good GCSE qualifications in maths and English so this is a consideration in our selection procedures, however, you will go through an Initial Assessment process which will help us place you on the correct course and identify any possible support needs that you might have. Also, you will be expected to show a high level of self-motivation and an interest in medicine.
Applications must be received no later than 31st May. Applications received after this date will not be considered until the following academic year.
Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete the Medicine course?
This course enables the learner to obtain an Access to HE Diploma, which is a credit based, graded qualification. Access Diplomas are a nationally accepted alternative to A Levels for entry to higher education and are recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for higher education.
