An irtec licence proves a commitment to safety and demonstrable professional development by both the technician and employer. This course includes one day of pre-assessment training, which covers current government legislation and standards and the types of equipment you will be expected to use for the assessments, plus one day of irtec service maintenance technician assessments, which prove current competence in the service and maintenance of heavy vehicles or buses and coaches.
The practical modules tested include:
- Braking systems
- Engine electrical systems
- Engine mechanical systems
- Wheel alignment and steering systems
- Hydraulic/pneumatic systems
The assessment day consists of five one hour practical assessments and an online test.
An irtec licence certifies the individual, rather than the employer, and can be used to demonstrate a common standard of skills from one company to the next. It could lead to progression onto the irtec Advanced Technician assessment.
The minimum entry requirement is two years' industry experience or a level 2 S/NVQ (or equivalent qualification) plus at least one year's experience in a relevant industrial environment. Applicants need to be working in the industry in order to undertake this course.
On successful completion of the assessment, you will be awarded an irtec Service Maintenance and Repair Technician Licence, which is valid for five years and you will be entered onto the irtec register of accredited technicians.
As the definition of full time and part time can vary from course to course, please check with the tutor as to the exact number of hours study each week this course will entail.
